Selecting the right label material is a critical decision. You may know that BOPP is useful for many applications and environments, including food containers and packaging labels. But what is BOPP, technically? Is it the best material for your product label? Read today&#;s blog from Label Solutions to find out.

What Is BOPP?

BOPP is a popular label material made of plastic. It stands for Biaxially-Oriented (BO) Polypropylene (PP). Biaxially-oriented refers to the production process that stretches the film over two directions, making it stronger and more transparent. Polypropylene is a versatile polymer that&#;s used in labels, food packaging, clear bags, and many other things.

Types of BOPP Labels

The Label Solutions team uses two kinds of BOPPs, white BOPPs and clear BOPPs, to produce quality, customized labels for many applications in many industries.

White BOPP

The most common BOPP label is white, which is non-toxic, extremely durable, and moisture-resistant. It has a strong permanent adhesive that sticks well to many surfaces. Manufacturers of health, beauty, and personal care products prefer white BOPP material for their labels. But white BOPP is also used for food labels. If your products may come in contact with oils or water, contact Label Solutions about our specialized BOPP materials.

Clear BOPP

Clear BOPP label material is durable and moisture-resistant, and it provides the additional benefit of virtual invisibility. When you apply it, clear BOPP appears as if there&#;s no label, which lets your product shine through. Clear BOPP even works on dark-colored containers and glass bottles. Wine and cosmetic products, in particular, love to achieve the &#;no-label look.&#;

Additional Benefits of BOPP Material

BOPP is tear-resistant, accepts many formulations of ink, and its price-point is competitive. Its moisture resistance and adhesive quality make BOPP an excellent choice for surfaces that could get wet or messy.

Polypropylene Labels – Everything You Need to Know

Format &#; Direct Thermal vs Thermal Transfer

If your company already has a thermal printer, such as a Zebra, Datamax, or Sato you would be a great candidate for thermal polypropylene labels.

Why go thermal you might ask?  Not only will these thermal BOPP labels produce a high-quality barcode but they are much cheaper than durable laser sheet, polyester, or vinyl labels.

These thermal BOPP labels would come in one of two formats: Direct Thermal (no ribbon) or Thermal Transfer (ribbon required).

The advantage of Direct Thermal labels is they do not require a ribbon to print.  This means that you only need to inventory one supply item, as opposed to the two required for Thermal Transfer.  Although these Direct Thermal BOPP labels are top coated for additional environmental protection, they are still more likely to scuff compared to their Thermal Transfer counterparts.

For that reason, we typically recommend customers utilize Thermal Transfer labels. After all, if you are looking for a more durable label, thermal transfer provides added durability which is critical so it meets your needs.   Finally, Thermal Transfer BOPP labels do require a special ribbon that has been formulated to print on the label (more on that later).
