What should be considered when choosing cable ties?
Tie wraps are also called cable ties (or colloquially zip ties). The two first names indicate the main application and the mode of action which should be considered while choosing the components. A proper choice guarantees that the ties will meet the expectations and prevent the user from any unwanted incidents that could occur during or after the assembly.
The first step in the selection of an appropriate tie wrap should be to determine its intended application. This will allow you to select the key properties best tailored to your needs. Zip ties that are intended for outdoor use should be characterized by resistance to sunlight and the operating temperature range corresponding to the conditions of their working environment. Tie wraps used inside buildings, especially the industrial ones, require a more precise determination of their application and operating conditions.
The temperature range is related to the durability of the cable tie material. Most often, they are made of polyamide which maintains its properties in temperatures ranging from -45°C to 85°C, which is sufficient for basic workshop applications - the main intended purpose of these products. If properly strapped, tie wraps hold a bundle of cables and fasten them together to keep them in order and facilitate wire grouping and classification. Zip ties are used in places, where cables are placed densely or where they should not be stored separately. It is worth mentioning that some cable ties have an additional surface for notes, on which the user may indicate their specific marking or describe the elements which they keep together. Another parameter that can be taken into account, apart from the temperature range, is the flammability rating, which indicates the flammability properties and fire safety of the used element. Cable ties are tested by way of a vertical flammability test.
Industries often impose additional requirements that must be met for the safe installation of zip ties. These can include such properties as e.g. possibility of unzipping the tie after installation or the opposite, i.e. permanent fixing, which can be undone only by damaging the tie. When focusing on the above mentioned aspects, we shouldnt forget about the functionality and much simpler properties that can also affect the proper use of these elements. The length and width of the zip tie has to be selected based on the diameter and number of cables in the bundle in order to prevent spontaneous unzipping or breakage.
The TME offer includes tie wraps in a wide range of colours. In some cases, the colours are of utmost importance, since when the colours of cable ties match the colours of the wiring, they dont attract additional attention to the cables located in visible places. Depending on the customer's requirements, plastic or stainless steel components are available. The latter are applied in conditions where plastics are not suitable for use. This may include submerged items or those used in acidic or alkaline environmental conditions. TME offer includes tie wraps from e.g. HellermanTyton or KSS Wiring manufacturers of a wide range of high-quality and versatile products.

Choosing cable ties can be more difficult than you might think, or that it should be. While it is possible to come online or go to your local DIY store and easily buy a pack of cable ties, depending on what you need to use your cable ties for it isnt simply the case of a cable tie being a cable tie.
In addition, the use of cable ties around the home and beyond has gone way past simply securing wires together or holding something else in place. This means that you are better served by choosing a cable tie that is specifically produced to help deal with the specific usage you have in mind. There are so many different types of cable ties available today that its possible to have a pack for every solution and application in your toolkit.
There are four things you should consider when choosing cable ties. Lets look at each of them and what you should consider when choosing cable ties.
Weve talked about different types of cable tie in another article here at Trade Warehouse. Look carefully and think about how your cable tie is designed, and what your cable tie was designed to do, before choosing yours.
Nylon cable ties are what wed consider a standard cable tie, what wed generally use for securing wires around the home. You might even use them for keeping doors closed, securing pipes, or as temporary locks. An upgrade on standard cable ties can be found in products that have metal barbs in the head of the tie. These cable ties bring added benefits in that they tend to be adjustable and therefore reusable, although 100% nylon reusable ties can be widely found, too. The metal reinforces the locking mechanism too, meaning it is useful when you need extra strength or will be using the cable tie in high stress environments.
Stainless steel cable ties and mounted head cable ties may also be useful in certain circumstances, too.
The simplest approach to this conundrum is to default to buying the longest possible variety of cable tie. Once youve fastened your cable tie, you just cut off the excess.
However, this wont always be practical nor economical. Here at Trade Warehouse our cable ties can be as long as mm, why use them to secure two or three wires?
You can easily use a tape measure to find out the diameter of cable tie you will need, and then buy the appropriately sized ties. All of our cable ties state the maximum bundle diameter which they can fasten. You may want to go one size up if your need is close to the stated bundle diameter
Depending on where your cable tie is going to be used, and what it is going to be used for, there may be several variables to consider when choosing a cable tie.
Think about whether:
Once you have answered these questions, you will have an idea of whether you need to choose a stronger nylon cable tie, a black UV stabalised nylon cable tie or opt for stainless steel.
In addressing questions about the environment your cable tie will be used in and exposed to, youll get an idea of how strong your cable tie needs to be.
Cable tie strength is measured in terms of tensile strength, where a higher tensile strength means a stronger cable tie. While a wider cable tie often correlates to higher tensile strength, you should also consider the material the cable tie is made from, and even if its a nylon cable tie you may have an upgraded cable tie featuring metal barbs in the fastener. All our cable ties have the manufacturers stated max tensile strength displayed.
Take the time to consider your DIY projects and what you need to use cable ties for. Whether you need to use cable ties that you can fasten and leave for years, need something more adjustable, and whatever the environment youll be using your cable ties in, youll find the ones you need here at Trade Warehouse.
