If you have spent any time on my blog or social media accounts, you may have noticed that I love using DIY cleaners. Throughout the years that I have been concocting and making my own cleaners, one thing that hasnt changed is my love for glass spray bottles. On the fence about using glass spray bottles and wondering just why you should make the switch from plastic to glass? Keep reading.
Plastic is composed of a number of chemicals, most of which are hard to pronounce. When certain ingredients come in to contact with plastic, it can cause the plastic to break down and infiltrate the contents of the container. Using essential oils in your cleaning supplies can add a lovely, non-irritating scent to your home, but they can also permeate whatever container they are in. Glass does not react with any DIY cleaning ingredients or essential oils so you can always be assured of that. While not every DIY cleaner stored in plastic will have adverse effects, there are enough of them that can so I steer away from using plastic whenever I can.
Perhaps the biggest misconception about glass spray bottles is that they are fragile. People are worried that they are going to shatter if bumped or dropped. Can glass bottles be fragile and highly breakable? The short answer to that is yes they can be if they arent made of high quality, thick glass. There is a big difference in quality from one brand to the other. I worked hard to source the best glass bottle option I could find and offer in my shop. I have used, refilled and washed my glass spray bottles literally hundreds of time. I have even dropped them on wood and tile floor and have yet to break one. If you are going to use glass spray bottles, be sure to use a durable and thick one like this one. I dont hesitate to let my kids use them when they are helping me clean and am happy to report no breakage from them handling them either.
If you look in the cleaning supply aisle at Target, Walmart or your local grocery store, you are bound to see some plastic spray bottle options out there. They may be made of a soft, flexible plastic or a more rigid plastic. While the low price can certainly be appealing in the moment, they simply arent made for longevity. While you may initially spend less up front, you will most likely be replacing them significantly sooner and several times over. Glass can literally last years with the proper care while plastic is just not designed to do so.
Not all sprayers are created equal. I searched for months before finally finding the sprayer that is on all the Clean Mama spray bottles. It sturdy, feels good to hold in your hand I find that most sprayers arent comfortable to hold because the plastic cuts into my hand. My sprayer does not its smooth and easy to use. It also has a spray, stream, and off to choose from I like spray for large surfaces and stream for tighter spaces.

The most common materials used for cleaning spray bottles are glass and plastic. Occasionally you will see a stainless steel option, but thats less common. If youre trying to decide between investing in glass spray bottles for cleaning or saving with plastic spray bottles, first take a look at the pros and cons of each below.
Upon initial purchase, plastic spray bottles are definitely the more cost-effective option. You can find plastic spray bottles at places like dollar stores VERY inexpensively.
The company is the world’s best Plastic Spray Bottle Supplier supplier. We are your one-stop shop for all needs. Our staff are highly-specialized and will help you find the product you need.
However its worth considering the fact that plastic bottles (especially those sold at dollar stores) are simply lower quality and not nearly as long-lasting as well-made glass bottles.
I purchased my amber glass spray bottles 5 years ago and have not had any need to replace a single bottle. On average, a pack of two quality glass spray bottles costs around $20. That means over the course of 5 years my glass bottles have cost me around $2 per bottle per year.
In another 5 years, Ill have spent the same amount I would have by purchasing new dollar store plastic bottles every year (and I anticipate using mine beyond 10 years) without generating all of the plastic waste!
Speaking of plastic waste when it comes to the more sustainable or eco-friendly option for cleaning spray bottles, glass is easily the better choice. As I mentioned above, the quality of plastic used in spray bottles will degrade over time while glass can be used over and over again so long as the bottle is still intact.
Additionally, once your bottle has reached the end of its usable life, glass can be recycled repeatedly, indefinitely (here are some helpful tips for how to properly recycle glass). Plastic can only be recycled a handful of times before it is no longer recyclable and instead is sent to a landfill.
But wont glass bottles break more easily than plastic? Yes if they are poor quality. These are the glass spray bottles I have been using for years without any issues. Its worth it to invest in a good set of glass spray bottles that will withstand the test of time.
If you invest in quality glass bottles, they can absolutely last you longer than any plastic bottle will. And with glass there is no concern of bottle material tampering with the quality of your cleaning ingredients over time.
When plastic bottles are in frequent contact with certain cleaning ingredients, the plastic material will break down and infiltrate the bottles contents.
Additionally, if you like to use essential oils in your cleaning solutions, they can permeate plastic containers. With glass, you dont have to worry about either of these issues!
One thing worth mentioning is the benefit of amber glass vs clear glass as a cleaning container. Ingredients like certain essential oils or hydrogen peroxide degrade when exposed to light. Amber glass will preserve the quality of these ingredients much longer than a clear glass bottle might, depending on where the bottle is stored.
Would you rather clean with a mismatched collection of store-bought plastic spray bottles, or a uniform collection of amber glass spray bottles?
I like using this exercise analogy. Many fitness experts will recommend investing in quality workout attire that makes you feel good to workout in because it is motivational!
I think that attractive cleaning supplies are also motivational! I am FAR more likely to clean when using attractive cleaning tools and supplies.
To label my cleaning supplies, I use this inexpensive label maker. Nice labels keep things looking streamlined. Cleaning with pretty bottles always makes me feel better about doing household chores.
If youre ready to invest in glass spray bottles for cleaning, these are the bottles I use and love. I have not had any issues with quality, the spray nozzle is comfortable, and they have been reliable in countless cleaning jobs.
